日本IBM　社会貢献活動にはいろいろな方法がある。日本ＩＢＭでは、そのひとつとして２００１年から「ＩＢＭキッズスマート（幼児教育支援）プログラム」を実施。幼稚園や保育園に、「ヤング・エクスプローラー」というカラフルなプラスチックな台に組み込んだパソコンを寄贈している。

　このパソコンには、「ミリーの算数のおうち」など約４０種類のソフトが搭載され、先生向けの研修会も開催。「単にお勉強をしてもらうプログラムではありません。この道具を通して、遊びながら生活のルールを学んだり、コミュニケーションを広げてほしい」（日本ＩＢＭ）

　同プログラムは１９９８年に米国のＩＢＭが開始し、現在５７カ国に広がっている。日本でも年間およそ１００台ずつ寄贈されているが、意外にも保護者からの抵抗も…。日常生活にパソコン、ゲーム、携帯電話などが浸透するなか、幼児時代からＩＴに触れさせたくないとの思いがあるからだが、日本ＩＢＭの担当者は「遊びや心を広げる」プログラムであることを地道に説明しながら活動を行っている。

　「社会貢献には、お金を寄付するという方法もありますが、当社はそれを教育へ切り替えた。未来を担う子供たちに夢を託し、いろいろな機会を与えたい」（同）

　少子高齢化の日本を支えていく子供たちへの支援。社員は自信を持って取り組んでいる。

where つれづれ (tsurezure) means “having nothing to do.”
